Tips to help kick start your new business journey

Relationship building: we are told that building and maintaining strong relationships is the key to increased sales volume over time and long term business success.

But how do you actually start a relationship? How do you 'generate' a lead? For business owners, it can be difficult to find the time for new business development.

As a business owner, you are usually expected to wear more than one hat. It's understandable then, that many people find themselves lost; lost in the details of their business and lost in the pursuit of new business.

Luckily, there are some small day-to-day things you can do to help get your new business journey started. We've compiled a few tips.

Use Linkedin

It's surprising how many business owners still don't utilise Linkedin. It's not just for big business communications, for connecting with recruiters, or for searching for candidates. It's the simplest way to keep an eye on your competitors, stay up to date with what's happening in your industry, and find people in your local area who might be interested in doing business with you. At the very least, it's an extremely effective networking tool. It's also a great way for sharing updates related to your business and sharing links to examples of your work.

If you write a blog or update content on your website regularly, sharing a link to your content via Linkedin is a great way to get your connections (and their connections) interested in what you do.

Show your expertise

When it comes to business, people seek out experts. As a business owner, you are an expert in your field. Prove it to prospective customers by providing 'free expertise' upfront. This can be as simple as starting an industry blog which you update frequently. Once people recognise that your advice is valuable, they will often be happy to start paying for it. You will also get your name out there in the process.

Organise a local event

For businesses in smaller cities and towns, a 'networking' event like a business talk over breakfast is a great way to meet people who are working in, or are interested in your industry. It's also a way for you to offer something valuable to the community without a hard sell.

Cross Promotion

Sometimes referred to as affiliate marketing by big businesses, this is a nice way to help out other local firms who can in turn help you out. This could be as simple as writing guest posts for each other's blogs or offering mentions in each other's eNewsletters. This gives both yourself and your affiliate access to a large database of people you've probably never come into contact with before.

If you haven't looked into any of the above, then now is a good time to start! Unfortunately there is no silver bullet when it comes to lead generation, but a consistent, multilateral, and strategic long-term approach will undoubtedly improve your relationships and your sales in the long run.
