With over a billion tweets sent every three days, Twitter is a force to be reckoned with.

Businesses will benefit from the microblogging giant because it allows for a constant flow of conversations with clients, is an excellent branding activity and helps boost search rankings.

Getting started

Unlike other social media sites, there are no special pages for businesses on Twitter, so setting up your page is just like setting up a personal page. Youll need some basic details about your business, a username, profile picture (128 x 128 pixels), background and header (1252 x 626 pixels).

With Twitter, youll need to learn to be succinct. You only have 160 characters to describe your business and all tweets must be 140 characters or less. Its a good idea to get familiar with services like bit.ly so you can shorten links in your tweets.

Do's and dont's of getting noticed

DO make a mission statement

Before you start, think about what you want to achieve, your tone and the ways youre going to promote your business.

DON'T over-promote

While none of your tweets should be completely off-brand, constantly pushing products wont win you many followers.

DO put follow buttons everywhere

Make sure you have a follow button on your homepage, your email sign-off and any EDMs you send out so fans know they can interact with you on Twitter.

DON'T repeat tweet

Generic thanks for following tweets that get sent to every follower are generally seen as spam.

DO follow the right people

Make an effort to seek out people in your industry, bloggers who may be interested in your products and services, and existing clients.

DON'T connect Facebook and Twitter

Aside from the fact that Facebook doesnt have the same character restrictions, you need to be interacting with other Twitter users consistently. So try and maintain each separately.

DO use hashtags

Hashtags are searchable terms that help users find tweets about specific things. Use relevant hashtags in your tweets, but dont overdo it!

DON'T use bad grammar and spelling

Not only does it look unprofessional, you will likely get called out by a follower if youre caught making constant grammatical and spelling mistakes.
