New Year's Business Resolutions

New Year's resolutions: we all make them and many of us break them just as quickly. However, when it comes to business New Year's resolutions, they can be a great way to set goals and kick ourselves into gear for the working year ahead.
If you wrapped up last year feeling frustrated and unmotivated in your job, you definitely don't want to start 2015 in the same way. Clients are switched on and they'll be able to tell if your heart isn't in your work.
Ramp up your positivity by reflecting on the things your business achieved and excelled in in 2014, and then set goals or 'resolutions' for the new year. We've compiled five strong and achievable business resolutions to help you get started.
1. Learn something new
Sometimes we feel disenchanted with our day-to-day work and many of us jump to the conclusion that it's time to start looking for a new role. However, a lot of the time the reason we're actually bored is because we've stopped learning. We become 'comfortable' and feel like we could do our daily tasks with our eyes closed.
Short courses, even if only mildly related to the work you're doing will help you to acquire new skills and keep your brain active and engaged. Most skills you pick up at short courses and workshops are transferable to any industry and any role. They can also be a great way to network for new business and to meet new friends. If you don't have time to attend in person, then try an online course. There are really no excuses these days!
2. Ditch anything unfruitful - and move on!
Not all products will be best sellers, not all marketing and sales campaigns will achieve optimal results, and not all business relationships will be beneficial. If something isn't working for you in your business, learn to let it go and move on.
Many business owners become concerned that they've invested so much money and energy into a certain idea that it will be the end of the world if it fails. The truth is, it is better to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and cut your losses before you waste any more time and energy on something that could otherwise be better invested elsewhere.
3. Learn how to delegateThis is easier said than done for a lot of business owners, but if you're running a business you won't last long if you try to do everything yourself.
Don't assume your staff will do something wrong, but be prepared for them to make mistakes. This is part of the learning process. If you don't teach anyone how to do your job, what will happen if you need to take some personal time off or you want to go away on holiday?
Sure, maybe they'll do things differently to how you would have done them, but a fresh set of eyes can often uncover new and sometimes better ways of approaching tasks.
4. Make business planning a weekly event
Business planning lets you take stock of the things that have worked and the things that haven't. It helps you set new directions or adjust old goals. Unfortunately, most business owners don't frequently put enough time aside to concentrate on their own business, pushing strategic planning to a later date because of everyday tasks that constantly get in the way.
Set a regular time each week to sit down and discuss the week ahead. You might only have half an hour free, but this is better than no time at all. This will help you avoid costly mistakes, stay on track, and feel more relaxed and in control.
5. Celebrate small successes
Our day-to-day lives can get so busy, that we often forget to stop and smell the roses. With project after project flooding through the doors, we sometimes feel like we're wading through a swamp and getting nowhere fast.
Whilst keeping on top of things is important, it's also important to acknowledge the little goals you achieve along the way. Give yourself a pat on the back or pop a champagne open for the staff to enjoy. You'll find that you and your staff both perform much more efficiently when morale is kept high.
