Google has a suite of easy-to-use services that help even the most technically challenged small business owner find their feet in the world of websites. One of these is Google AdWords, the companys flagship advertising platform.

What is Google AdWords?

Google AdWords is an online advertising program that aims to help you increase web traffic and online sales through text-based advertisements displayed on the Google network. Its unique in that it allows you to choose where your ad appears, what it says, your budget and which advertising model to use (e.g. pay per click or per impression).

Getting started

Your first step is to visit Google AdWords and sign up for a free account. From there, its time to create your first ad campaign.

To set up your ad, youll also need a headline, short description, URL and display URL for your ad. After this, youll be prompted to pick keywords that people use when searching for products or services that your business provides. Google can help you choose the right words and you can add or edit them during the campaign.

If youre not feeling confident, you can go with Googles default options when it comes to things like choosing which websites in the Google network you want to display on, whether you want to target computers or smartphones and more. Otherwise, you can select all the specifics yourself so that you can have an advertising scheme tailored to suit your unique business needs.

Once youve set up your first campaign, its a good idea to check in with how its tracking daily and make adjustments where things like certain keywords arent working for you. Then youll be well on your way to a successful campaign.
