Content marketing has been gaining speed over the last couple of years, and 2013 is set to be the year it really takes off. Still not sure what content marketing is? Not convinced it isnt just a passing fad? Read on:

What is it and why should I use it?

The Content Marketing Institute defines content marketing as a marketing technique of creating and distributing relevant and valuable content to attract, acquire and engage a clearly defined and understood target audience with the objective of driving profitable customer action.

It is a non-interruptive form of marketing that delivers information, rather than pushes products.

How can my small business get involved?

Theres no one silver bullet in content marketing. It all depends on whats going to work for your industry, your client and your business specifically.

A blog and regular eNewsletter are great places to start content marketing. Rather than thinking about how you can push products with your content, consider how you can add value to your clients lives.

When you have a little more experience, you can branch out and start creating richer content. Instructional or informational videos, infographics and original images are all great double-duty, highly-shareable content marketing solutions. For example, a video can be posted on your business YouTube channel, blog and other social pages like Facebook.

How do I start?

The first thing to do is to create an editorial plan. Be realistic about how often you can blog and what you can afford to produce. With this in mind, the best way to start is, well, just to start! Build a simple blog that is optimised for search and start following your editorial plan. Youll soon find out what works and what doesnt and can revise your plan to fit.

Content marketing isnt the scary new frontier you might think it is; all you need is a little creativity and a desire to communicate with your clients!
