Making a mobile-friendly website
Don't be left behind
The mobile revolution has well and truly arrived, and ignoring that fact may limit your website's reach and functionality. Thankfully, making a mobile-friendly site is easier than you might think, and you don't have to spend a fortune doing it. There are plenty of options to consider including these three solutions.
Create a mobile version of your site
You can create a parallel version of your site, designed specifically for mobile, for little cost. The site's mobile design will differ substantially to its desktop counterpart; often meaning rearranging the headers and layout of your page. Mobile users typically want to know how to find you, so the contact details and a map will often appear closer to the top of the page.
Pay attention to technical details
To ensure your site performs well on mobile, there are a few technical elements to consider. The site should be able to detect the user's device and generate a page exactly matched to its capabilities i.e. a mobile user should be directed to a mobile version of the site. It's also worth considering removing some features which may clutter the page, as well as those features which do not work well on smartphones, such as Flash.
Adjust your existing site
If you're not quite ready to rebuild your site to be mobile friendly, consider simplifying your site design. Bring your site up on a mobile and identify the elements that make navigation and reading difficult. For example, you might want to look at simpler page designs, fewer images, larger font sizes and bigger buttons.
