SSL Certificates and why you need one for your website

Googles new security update and what it means for you.

Earlier in 2017, Google released information with regard to the new security ranking that will be part and parcel of their newest Chrome browser version to be released shortly. Hand in hand with the browser release, comes equivilant updates to their Google ranking system which is also based around their Safe Browsing practices.

Their new ranking system will mean that a website that has the extra layer of SSL security will rank higher than one without.

What is SSL?

Secure Sockets Layer establishes an encrypted link between the server and the browser. Traditionally SSL certificates have been used mostly for e-commerce. Even though SSL is primarily a service that encrypts the data between the web server and the client's browser, to obtain an SSL certificate you have had to verify that you are who you say you are, and that your website is a legitimate business with a real history behind you.

Google has recognised that the internet advances have enabled us all to live, shop and socialise online have also opened the door for phishing, malware, viruses and identity theft.

In response to the increase of hyper crime, Google is taking things one step further and has asked legitimate businesses to verify their status with the ultimate goal that we all have a less exposed, more productive experience online. This will help to ensure any interactions between website and site visitor is encrypted to minimise MITM (man in middle) attacks.

SSL will help to facilitate that.

What will happen?

If your website complies and makes use of this extra layer of security, Google will acknowledge this and over time your website ranking will benefit against other websites/competitors who have not complied. Your clients will be directed smoothly and invisibly and life will go on as usual.

If you choose not to comply, Google will consider your website unverified and will warn users that your website could be unsafe.

How can we as your website provider help with this?

For a very minimal fee we can apply for your SSL Certificate for you, install it, setup redirects so Google and others know your website addresses for all pages have changed, update your sitemaps and more, verify your information and ensure that you and your website comply with this latest update.

To make this happen, simply email your Consultant your approval to go ahead.
